Eric Branchek – Initial Concepts

Concept 1: Algorithmic Composition

My first idea is to make a product utilizing algorithm composition concepts. I have a few ideas of what I could do with this, but one of the main ones I am particularly interested in is making a program that can take a bunch of songs written by a specific band as input data and compose its own song with a similar style. The idea of computers writing music has been of interest to me for a while, and I think this particular concept is something I could continually expand on.

Concept 2: Vaporwave Experience

Another idea that I had come up with was performing a live set of vaporwave songs, giving the audience a visual experience in addition to hearing the music. Vaporwave is a genre of music that is based around messing with samples of past music, with a goal of giving the listener a “nostalgic” feel. Visually, vaporwave art is based around early Internet design, 3D rendered objects, and other ideas, giving a lot of room to experiment with visuals.

Concept 3: Scoring the World

My last idea is making a 2D/3D (probably 2D) game with a world that is based on a real place in the world. It would have an appropriate score, and appropriate activities to do in the virtual area. I think this type of idea would help me learn more about graphics and potentially modelling, if I take the 3D route.

  1. ALGORITHMIC COMPOSITION
This is an intriguing idea that raises a lot of fascinating questions for any media, not just music. For example, I’ve seen a number of machine learning bots that will take as input screenplays from TV shows a movies, then generate a “typical” scene from that genre. The results are mostly nonsensical and funny, but they get enough right that you can see where this is going in the not-too-distant future. Those take *text* as input, however, which is relatively easy to parse and generate. Music is much harder to break down, analyze and compose. I love the idea in the abstract, but *how* is it technically feasible to do this?

    VAPORWARE PERFORMANCE
Interesting. I would hope that the performance — across all the media — would have some sort of unifying storyline, perhaps about our evolving relation to technology?

    SCORING THE WORLD
Interesting. Need more detail to be able to offer much feedback. It would be interesting if the geography / physics / mechanics of the game matched that of the real location. I could imagine a series of “platformer” levels for instance, played in settings that resemble a real-life platformer.

  2. I honestly have to say that I am in love with the Vaporwave concept. There is so much that can be done with such an expansive concept. you could look at numerous examples of some vaporwave work and see how you can meld that into reality. You could use projectors visualizing vapor graphics on the walls around the room that this show would be set up to create an athletic pleasing environment centered around Vaporwave. Alot if potenial for this project, my only conern is finding the right programs. I would suggest doing some research on what would work for projection mapping. If this Idea is chosen, Have fun with it and best of luck Eric 🙂

  4. As I said in class, I really love your first two ideas, but I think the decision between them comes down to what you’re really interested in skill-wise and what would best show off your talents. I think the vaporwave idea would be really exhibit design-y, while the algorithmic composition is very code-based. From what we talked about in class, it seems like you’re more into the code-based creativity of the first concept and that project would better showcase your skills and career interests. Either way, I love the different ways you’ve come up with to incorporate your passion for music!

  5. Concept 2 could be really aesthetically pleasing and a cool experience to be at the center of. Concept 1 may be beyond the scope of the time given for the construction of the project, but maybe you take elements for concept 1 and apply them concept 2. How would you use vaporwave elements in the performance to wow the audience?
