~Revised Concept # 2~

Future Navigation

Hidden menus, like the hamburger menu, have shown to be counterproductive when it comes to the user experience. The reason for this is due to that the hamburger menu was a quick solution to better handle a navigation bar for the mobile version of websites. However, this has become such an industry standard that no one is changing this practice. Today, this standard practice is becoming out of date and needs to be replaced, but with what? What would it look like and how it will function? Can it be used only on mobile or can it be a holistic element?

In order to answer these questions, I would do a deep dive to see how people are handling navigation, test to see what type of menu people like (header nav, hidden menu, footer nav, side nav, etc), use the collected data to come up with new designs and test those designs to see what the new navigation concept will be.

This will be done by in-person interviews, finding sources and insight from people working on this problem, on and offline user testing, and applying cognitive psychology principles.

The final deliverable will be a small exposition and documenting my process, data, and the solutions that came out of this case study.

Revised Concept – Jonah

I am pretty sure I am going to go through my first idea. I think it will fulfill me creatively and will also be something I want to put on my resume.

I am going to write and record an album and do a full marketing campaign. The marketing campaign deliverables will consist of a Market Overview and Vendor Options Report as well as a Post Campaign Effectiveness Report. The majority of advertisements will be run through Facebook ads manager but I will also try to get other forms of media into the mix.

Research

I am currently working with Mark, my boss at the AIMM recording studio, to get feedback on my recordings and mixes to see how I can improve. Professional sounding recordings are essential to this project.

I am going to work this semester with Facebook ads manager to get a feel for it and figure out how to create effective digital advertisements. I can do more research online but the best way to get good at this is to get experience running campaigns.

Revised Concept – Algorithmic Composition

I am fairly set on my first idea with algorithmic composition. I feel like the scope can be small or widened, depending on the progress I make.

Here are some of the responses I have to comments that came up:

Parsing the music will be hard – My idea for this is to transcribe the songs into MIDI sheet music, so that my program can take that as input. While it would be cool to have actual audio parsed, I agree that that would take too much work.

Possibly beyond the scope of time – I feel confident that I can start small and build up as much as I can. I have already started a bit of work on this idea in my free time, so I have a feel for the challenge and how long it might take.

Incorporating aspects of Idea 2 into this idea – I think this is definitely a cool idea! I could use vaporwave songs to generate new vaporwave songs. The only tricky bit I see with this is that some aspects of vaporwave can be glitchy sounding, which is more of an audio thing that can’t be transcribed into audio. For example, it might pitch shift a semitone off a normal key.

Instead of that, maybe I could use the visual aspect from Idea 2. The only question I see with that is whether or not the visuals would be generated on-the-spot, too. If they would be, I would have to see how much work would go into that, because I do not have the background to really know right now.

Revised Concept – Globe Projection Mapping

Initial Concept: I want to create a space using a physical built globe and projection mapping to show causes with the issues revolving recycling on the earth. I imagine using a showroom downstairs with the globe in the center of the room hanging from the ceiling, trash and garbage underneath it and around the area of the globe, heat lamps in certain areas of the room, and overall a dark atmosphere. On one wall there will be statistics, and on the other two walls there will be option A) if we continue to recycle and take care of the earth, and B) if we don’t take care of it what the planet will turn into. On the globe I want to project the earth and the amount of recycling in each continent possibly using visual graphs built into the globe along with projection mapping.

Program: Lightform

Similar projects:

Layout of room:

  • globe hanging from the top center of the room
  • trash around the bottom of the globe on the floor
  • heat lamp in the top right corner of the room
  • projection mapping on each wall and on globe
  • wall 1: option 1 for the future – clean healthy planet
  • wall 2: option 2 for the future – destroyed world filled with trash
  • globe will be interactive being able to move the globe

Timeline:

October – December: Research lightform, learn the program, learn animation

December – January: Design layout of projections

Feb – March: Build globe/in room items

April: *hopefully* start testing project /get feedback

October – May: Figure out what I want displayed, research topic, get statistics, etc

3 Initial Concepts

3d Character Animated Model/Experiences with AR

I would like to create a 3D representation of an object or person that is manipulated by other objects or vertices in a simulated space. I would like to see my characters through an AR effect through a phone. I will be using references and imaginative creatures throughout this process. All I want to get out of the project is to see my characters come to life.

Rotoscoping storyboard of life

Based on youtube vides and countless examples from pinterest and instagram posts, I would like to view my life in a story concept; where I will be drawing it out using a rotoscoping method. I don’t have many further details about this but I would like to use stop motion in it as well.

2d Animation for Commercial Ads/Company sites

I would like to see my 2d creation with an abnormal object turning into something else as it unfolds across the screen. Not too many thoughts about this. Still need to process what is going to happen.

Digital manga and Marketable material (Revisited)

Digital manga and Marketable material (Revisited)

(Previously)

Using the skills I’ve been gaining the past year (and while in Japan) for my thesis, I will create high quality chapters of a digitally created manga (using photoshop / clip studio paint & various techniques and digital methods) along with character sheets, cover, marketable materials such as Poster (photoshop), Video Advert (adobe after effects), Merchandise, etc.

(Revisited)

To make my manga idea more unique and innovative I have decided to work multiple elements into the project such as basing character designs on modern/ popular fashion, and unique combinations of story concepts combining western elements I’m accustomed to with eastern elements that I learned about while abroad. Ex. being the incorporation of elements from Japanese religions that I am learning about in my “Religion in Japan” lectures that I have every Tuesday and Thursday. I also want to explore how the digital medium would allow me to present the manga in different ways if time allows.

List of deliverables I would hope to present

Small Physical Booklet

  • Manga content
  • Character sheets / Turn Arounds
  • Project info
  • etc

Video Promo (with V/O)

High Quality Character Sheets (adaptation ready)

Merchandise (based on Japanese  IP Merchandising)

Pin(s)

T-Shirt(s)

Poster(s)

Idea 1: Media Production company

Myriad Media is my LLC based out of New Jersey.http://myriadmedianj.com We create content for small businesses in hopes of driving more internet traffic to their sites/pages, bringing in more customers to their store, and developing their brand. Eventually we would like to be able to pursue creative projects such as short films, traveling documentaries, cinematic trailers or promos, and more. I would like to take what we have now and turn it into an established company that gets more consistent work and has a complete legal structure, hire our first employees that aren’t freelance workers, and produce creative content. I think there are a few ways to make this project interactive and sharable. My strongest idea is to document the exact steps and growth that I can capture and share the different physical and digital media that we are responsible for.

Idea 2: DIY “more modular” computers

I had a pretty random idea that stemmed from my interest in computers and building computers. From building computers I learned that people have the belief that building a computer is much more complicated than it is. The reality of computers is that they typically have around a dozen parts and components/peripherals that make them functioning computers. It is easy to understand how each part contributes to the bigger picture but it is hard to find parts that are compatible with all the other parts in the system. It was from this realization that I thought of the possibility of making computer-building kits that included parts that were more like Legos, blocky and simple, rather than flashy and catered to enthusiasts. I think that with the right plastic housings and coverings on all things unnecessary which are mostly on the motherboard, there could be much simpler computer parts. With that I would want to make a how-to pamphlet included in the different kits and ultimately develop a super-simple DIY computer kit that kids could put together from scratch and interact with when plugged into a monitor and keyboard. If this could be done relatively cheap then it would be a great way to teach kids how computers work in a fun way, or maybe be a cheaper alternative to buying big brand names for adults. I’m not entirely sure how I could do this and what exactly would be involved but it’s a nice thought.

Idea 3: Watch fanatics site/social media page

I am very interested in entrepreneurship, business management, and content creation. An idea I had related to this utilizes some skills that I have, but it is very abstract right now as I am not entirely sure how I would do it. The idea is to make short cinematic promotions about higher-end watches that just display the given watch and then links to where you could buy it. This would be something grounded mostly in social media as I would see it being a more review based site rather than a site that is trying to sell you something. If I were to make content I would see it being primarily product photography shots and then short clips of the products that are about 15-45 seconds long. Ideally the revenue would come from ads linked to watch selling websites run on the pages.

Initial Concepts

Idea #1: Video game

My first idea isn’t very wild but i have always had a love of fighting games from all types of genres of it. The problem with most fighting games for people that don’t play them is that they are not made for casual players. Though smash is a game that does have fighting in it, I would not consider smash to be a fighting game because it involves to much random elements to the game play and how the victor is decided. My fighting game would be more centered around a 3d concept instead of 2d and would be fun for not experienced players but could have a high skill cap to it.

Idea #2: Action figure

I have always loved designing new and interesting characters in my drawings and giving them their own flare and personality. I have also been taking the digital fabrication class so i am becoming well acquainted with everything they have to offer. From 3d printing and laser cutting to the cnc machine and printing out stickers. So i could design and draw a character of something i have made up and then proceed to model them in 3d to be printed out. They would be able to stand and pose with joints that i have experimented on in the past to make and would function pretty fluidly. Then i would take extra care to make them as detailed and interesting as possible by laser engraving specific things on to the character and adding stickers in some areas to make them stand out, they would also be painted.

Idea #3: Combing the real world and games

So in this crazy idea i want to combine both of my passions to create a totally new and interesting fighting game experience. This would involve the most research out of all the ideas because it would be a dream project. In a normal game the controller you are using is a normal hand held controller or a keyboard but this would be a totally different experience. The controller that you would be using wouldn’t even have buttons on it. You would be using the action figure of your character to fight the other opponent. I would have a camera set up to capture the motions of the action figures being controlled and on the joints and fists and feet would be stickers that the camera would recognized for points of interest just like how it can be used in AR examples and games. I have not totally thought out the game play of the characters and how it would work but i think it would be extremely interesting to combine toys and video games.

Initial Concepts – Jonah Malvey

Idea 1

Currently I am hoping to get a job in advertising/media planning after I graduate. I had an internship doing this over the summer and I want to use this project as a way to show off some of the skills I learned. This project will combine my multimedia content creation skills with digital marketing campaign management.

In this idea I would be creating an album and running a full multimedia marketing campaign around it. The “IMM” part of this project would be recording and producing music, videos, and digital advertisements.

The marketing side of this project would include creating a media mix and full campaign analytics reports. I would be running and optimizing digital ads with Facebook ads manager and also looking into other forms of digital media. I would plan every ad placement in a calendar and write two reports. One outlining all of the proposed media outlets and one summarizing the results of the campaign.

Idea 2

Have you ever driven a car while listening to music? Have you ever wanted the music to be an interactive experience directly linked to your driving? This project idea could potentially be a solution to this problem.

My second idea is a music streaming application that syncs the bpm of your music to the speed at which you are driving. There would have to be some conversion rate from mph to the bpm of the music. As you accelerate, the tempo of the song will increase and it will do the opposite if you slow down. Other possible features could be changing the pitch as you turn.

Some problems I would have creating this would be learning how to create the application itself. I would also need to learn how to program the software to make the adjustments to the music. This would be very difficult but could be a great learning experience for me.

Idea 3

Another idea that I was thinking about was to make an interactive art exhibit. I wanted to make a giant sculpture that would interact with the viewer.

The exhibit could use arduino to interact with the viewers. I think creating a fully interactive haunted house could be a fun project, because it gives the interaction between the user and the exhibit a purpose… to scare the user.

Obviously this is a drastically different idea from my other two ideas. Maybe I could incorporate the idea of creating an art exhibit with one of the other projects.

Caitlyn Connelly — Initial Concepts

IDEA #1 – PUPPETS!!!!

My most prominent skills in IMM are in video production, design, and fabrication. While brainstorming over the summer about what could combine my love for comedy, writing, children’s TV, set design, and prop design, I came to PUPPETS! I thought about how I loved The Muppets, Sesame Street, and a very weird show on Nickelodeon in 2005 called Mr. Meaty, and suddenly making a pilot for a show starring puppets made a lot of sense. I’m pretty deep into pre-production right now and feeling really excited about it. (Short synopsis: Two best friends take on seventh grade in “FREAK AND THE BEAST.”) I’ve already built a prototype puppet and finalized designs for the sets. I hope to have 5 characters (including an Anything Muppet) and 4 sets to create an 11 minute pilot.

IDEA #2 – MINIATURE TECH DOLLHOUSE

Since Freak and the Beast already combines so many of my interests, it was hard to think of an idea with all the previous things I mention taken off the table, but I guess one of my passions I haven’t explored in IMM is miniatures. I think it’d be fun to create a modern dollhouse with an accurate portrayal of how many screens are in a typical household. You can buy LED screens pretty small, so it’d be cool to have functioning screens in the dollhouse, all playing era-accurate media like YouTube and Netflix. I like the idea of the juxtaposition between dollhouses (which you might picture as pretty vintage) and an accurate portrayal of technology in the household.

IDEA #3 – DIGITAL GRAPHIC NOVEL

Honestly, even if it wasn’t related to my career, I’d probably continue with puppets because I love them so much, and even more since I’ve started research. If I couldn’t do puppets, I’d probably write and illustrate a digital graphic novel, because I love those, but I knew I wanted to so something way more involved and layered for my thesis.
