Disclaimer, I’m writing this from Houston, Texas with the power of the last two brain cells I have left after a nonstop day at the conference. I’ve had less time than I’d like to think of my ideas, so these are very general and will need much refining in the future (of may be changed altogether…I’ll think on it more when I can actually keep my eyes open)
- An app that reads business cards and automatically finds the person on LinkedIn, Instagram, stores the email as a contact…etc. Combines computer vision, app development, and UI/UX. I feel like this has been done already and it seems a bit difficult, but I’ll do more research.
- Light generating object. There was this amazing keynote talk at the conference by a woman who created a soccer ball that stores the kinetic energy generated by kicking the ball and then used it to give off light in communities with issues with power accessibility. I have no idea what object it will be yet, and I have no experience in physical computing, but I still think it’s a cool concept.
- Oh geez I really don’t know…giant holograms? Is that a thing? I think it’s a thing. I’ve seen videos where people make tiny ones with cd cases and iPhones.
Hi! So, despite you saying you were tired from being at a conference all day, I really like your ideas.
I think the first one is interesting because it could really help fix the problem of credit card theft, however at the same time, it could also pose as a danger to have someone’s info all locked onto one card. People would have to be careful with what kind of info their linking to their card.
The second idea is cool too because – let’s be real – light up objects look really awesome. I feel like you could definitely expand upon this idea and make some sort of object/thing connect with light in some way. If you’re interested in this idea a lot, check out Dave Paulson’s thesis project from last semester for inspiration. He made lights light up in time with the instruments him and his band were playing on. You could definitely do your own twist on that.
And the third idea I like because I’d like to see holograms of things. Like it’d be real cool if you could video chat a friend and they could be projected through a hologram into your room. I feel like there’s gotta be a way for holograms to work like that, but no one’s really looked into it.
Idea 1 – https://techcrunch.com/2018/03/09/microsoft-pix-can-scan-business-cards-to-your-contacts-find-people-on-linkedin/
Idea 3 – I’m intrigued by the “giant” part. Those little CD-case holograms are cool tricks, but to do something human-size or even bigger introduces the possibility of embodied interaction with the image, if you were to combine this with a Kinect or a Leap Motion interface. The scale of our surroundings — and the objects in our surroundings — has a big impact of our experience of a space. How to do this, though? Maybe the same basic “Peppers Ghost” idea as the CD-case, just with larger projection surfaces… plexiglass, even clear shower curtains. I’ve also seen people projecting on machine-generated fog: https://makezine.com/2014/04/18/fog-projection-combined-with-gestural-interface-to-create-hologram-touchscreen/
What would the imagery be, BTW? Might be interesting to bring in Kung Fu?
Idea 2 – I’m also intrigued, but I guess I need more info. I’m confident you could figure out the physical computing part of the project.
